Archaeologists are continually on the search for new discoveries around the globe. Recently, preserved Roman swords were found hidden deep inside the Dead Sea cava, dating back to almost 2000 years ago. The Dead Sea is situated between Israel and Jordan, forming part of the border between the two countries.
These ancient Roman weapons were found in an isolated cave near the Dead Sea. The Israeli researchers that found these gems originally entered the cave to photograph Hebrew words that were inscribed on rock formations within the cave.
Unexpectedly, the search team discovered a crevice in the remote cliffs that were overlooking the sea. Right inside was where the swords were located. Archaeologists are thinking that these words were hidden by Judean rebels who seized them from Roman adversaries, which may explain why they were found in this specific location.
Three out of the four swords had iron blades that were still inside their wooden scabbards. Researchers also found leather strips and wooden parts attached shaped into handles for the blades. The blades of the three longer swords were around 60-65 cm, classified as Roman spatha swords. The shorter one, was 56 cm long and classified as a ring-pommel sword.

After these excellently preserved weapons were found, they were transferred to a climate-controlled laboratory for preservation and conservation.
Dr. Eitan Klein states that “the weapons were taken as booty from Roman soldiers or from the battlefield, and [intentionally] hidden by the Judean rebels for reuse”
Archeologists currently believe the swords were used during the Bar Kokhba Revolt, which took place around 132 CE. The Bar Kokhba revolt was a large-scale armed rebellion initiated by the Jews, against the Roman Empire.
